Dream it, do it
And I'm floating in a most peculiar way. And the stars look very different today. For here am I sitting in a tin can. Far above the world. Planet Earth is blue and there's nothing I can do.
David Bowie released Space Oddity on July 11 1969, several weeks before Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins landed Apollo 11 on the surface of the moon, and mankind took its first tentative steps on the big piece of cheese in the sky.
Bowie almost dreamed what the astronauts aboard Apollo 11 would see and imagined the circumstances which might befall the crew, should the mission all go pear shaped. Many a child growing up after the moon landing, dreamed of seeing our blue planet from the heavens, looking down on earth and one day wanting to be an astronaut.
In the last few days, entrepreneur and dreamer Richard Branson has taken Virgin Galactic to space on the first commercial space flight. He said “I have dreamt about this moment since I was a child, but nothing could have prepared me for the view of Earth from space. It was magical.” He has realised his very own childhood dream. He made his own magic.
We created Fearless Collective to help small and medium business realise their dreams, to find their space in the market, support their families and leave a kind of legacy. In a way, it’s our dream we are making our reality. Our founders each have their own fascination with space. Kate has always had a fascination for astronomy, the planets and the stars. Pete found a love of black holes, far distant planets and galaxies as a child, as has David. Our real fascination is to see others reach their business goals and to make their dreams of their future a reality.
Branson tweeted when he was in space “I was once a child with a dream looking up to the stars. Now I'm an adult in a spaceship looking down to our beautiful Earth. To the next generation of dreamers: if we can do this, just imagine what you can do.” Imagine if we all got to dance to the tune we compose for ourselves, to chase the dreams we had as children and to follow paths we set, no matter how outrageous.
Dreaming is not a waste of time, but an opportunity to see what can be in front of you. We are big on seeing dreams and wishes evolve into potential and ultimately, reality. We also believe the only barrier is you. You are the only person who can limit your dreams and quash your imagination.
We don’t all have the billions of Branson, Musk and Bezos, the three entrepreneurs looking to space as the next frontier. But few of our real dreams and desires require millions. They need dedication, persistence and an unwavering belief in the outcome.
From there, as they say, the sky is the limit.
